Happy Birthday Hip Hop, Google that yo!
It's the 44th anniversary today of the alleged start of Hip Hop when Kool Herc first mixed two records at a party at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx.
Google is celebrating with an interactive doodle where you can mix.

The Ghetto Brothers instigated the Hoe Avenue peace meeting that mostly stopped the gangs from fighting and allowed everyone to get together and get down if you believe the fable.

Bambaata was one of the the Black Spade’s warlords and was at the meeting.

Listen to this 10 minute freestyle from black thought. Even if you don't like hip hop you have to respect the unbelievable talent to do this.

Brand Nubian, Dead Prez and Four Owls are pretty much the only acts I've listened to post 80's. Hip Hop turned to shit just as house was entering its prime.

Dj chris read mixes classic albums with the samples that formed the album. Really good series. Black sheep, a tribe called quest the pharcyde. Can be found on the wax poetics soundclound and chris reads as well.

Check the WP and LP as well. There's loads more of that sort of stuff from the 60s spread all over YouTube as well. Were never classed as musicians, but poets. Listening to Watts Propets and putting it next to (for example) NWA or Ice T in the 80s/90 it's like the relationship between the Beatles and Oasis. Foundations shit.

Also a lot of the old Blues stuff from people like Muddy Waters, all half-spoken and talking about day to day life being poor and black. The influence is clearly there.

Go back even further Crass.

Watts Prophets, Last Poets, and of course Gil Scott Heron.

Spoken word revolutionary poetry over bongos in clandestine Harlem/LA jazz clubs = the real old skool.

Too many pups upon here

Refer to early hip hop and see Gary Byrd's The Crown - huge cross over track that went global

Also, cast a mind to Punk Funk as the genre's root - Afrika Bambataa and the Soul Sonic Force; Planet Rock.

Love a touch of K9, Dog Rap, barking mad to ignore it....
